During emergencies, we're often reminded to donate to reputable charities to help other people devastated by loss. And while cash is usually best, you may be feeling inspired to help others by sewing comfort items like blankets or quilts. There are organizations that accept or coordinate donations year-round to benefit needy people and pets. And many provide free patterns for inspiration!

Here's a helpful list of national and regional groups that support this kind of giving, plus suggestions for donating locally if that's a more practical route for you.

Project Linus accepts handmade blankets for children in need (through local chapters). The group has delivered more than 6.5 million quilts since 1995.

Quilts of Valor provides quality handmade quilts to American veterans touched by war.

Quilts for Kids provides patchwork quilts to children of abuse or with life-threatening illnesses.

Ryan's Case for Smiles distributes whimsical handmade pillowcases to hospitalized children. "Helping kids feel better to heal better."

Snuggles Project helps provide security blankets to animals in shelters as they await adoption. You make it then donate to one of the participating shelters in their Worldwide Shelter Directory.

The Linus Connection delivers handmade security blankets to children in crisis situations in Texas. The blankets go to children in hospital emergency rooms, crisis centers, foster care, battered women's shelters -- wherever there's a need.
