Farmhouse Sampler - Block 9 (Dutchman's Puzzle)

Farmhouse Sampler - Block 9 (Dutchman's Puzzle)

This is it: the final block of the Farmhouse Sampler quilt. We started a few weeks back with a Yankee Puzzle block and now we're ending it with the Dutchman's Puzzle block.

Before you make your final block, take a moment and lay out your blocks the way you want them. You can use the lay out I designed -- or make your own. All the blocks are the same size so their positions are interchangeable. Once you've got a layout, determine your colors and placement for your final block. This is your last opportunity to get your quilt the way you want it, so spend some extra time here.

Once you're done, we can get sewing.

CUT:

  • eight (8) 4-5/8" squares from A, cut in half on the diagonal (yields 16 triangles)
  • one (1) 8-3/4" square from B, cut in half on both diagonals (yields 4 triangles)
  • one (1) 8-3/4" square from C, cut in half on both diagonals (yields 4 triangles)

PRESS.  With a hot iron, press your blocks.

RST and SEW.  Place 1 "A" block RST on 1 "B" (or "C") block. Align the bottom and diagonal edges. The top point will overhang on your flying geese block. Sew 1/4" seam along the diagonal edge (shown above with the dashed pink line). Repeat this for all "B" and "C" blocks, adding just 1 "A" triangle to each.

PRESS.  With a hot iron, press seams toward the "A" unit, as shown above. (You can see the dog ears sticking out, showing that I pressed them toward to white side.)

RST and SEW.  Place another "A" block RST with the "B" (or "C") block. Align the bottom and diagonal edges. Sew 1/4" seam along the diagonal edge (as shown above with the pink dashed line). Repeat for all "B" and "C" blocks.

PRESS and TRIM.  Press seams on your flying geese blocks. Trim off dog ears.

LAY OUT.  Using the block diagram as a guide, lay out your Dutchman's Puzzle quilt block.

PIECE and PRESS.  With a 1/4" seam allowance, piece your flying geese blocks together, working 2 blocks at a time. Once you have 4 corner units, press the seams on your blocks.

PIECE and PRESS.  With a 1/4" seam allowance, piece your blocks to make 2 rows. Press your seams. (Top row, press right; bottom row, press left.) Now piece your 2 rows together to make your finished block. Press your seams as desired -- and your block is done!
